to be a "toqui or warrior chief" of the Mapuche in South America, he had to run carrying a heavy log through the slopes, peaks and valleys of the Andes. as the poet said: "the light of day saw him, the pale afternoon saw him, the cold night saw him, and always the tree trunk on the shoulders of the titan . . the dawn said enough, and raised the high forehead of the great Caupolican"
